Your Name: Diana
Age: 23
Contact: My tumblr is dianapocalypse and my skype is betterwithworms!
Character Name: Mia Fey
Series: Ace Attorney (Localized American ver)
Timeframe: Shortly after her first trial, aged 24
Background: Mia grew up in the mountain village of Kurain, known for its powerful spirit mediums, and is the first daughter of the master of the Kurain Spirit Channeling technique, Misty Fey. While she was in line to take over the title of master and, by extent, the town of Kurain, she left the village several years after the disappearance of her mother, who had been the victim of a brutal media smear campaign. She began studying law in order to find the truth about the case which had ruined her mother's name.
Throughout law school, she was single-minded and excelled in all of her classes, gaining the admiration of her peers. During this time she also did her best to maintain a relationship with her younger sister, Maya, whom she had left behind when she left Kurain. They managed to maintain a close sibling relationship despite the distance and Maya frequently visited.
After becoming a full fledged attorney, Mia joined the prestigious Grossberg and Co. law offices and largely worked assisting other attorneys at the firm until her first case in February of 2013. A murder trial, Mia prepared thoroughly and was able to discover the true killer's identity. However, the case ended tragically when her client killed himself to prevent Mia from exposing the killer's identity, as he was in love with her. Naturally, this was incredibly traumatic for her.
Mia comes to the Black Tide one month after this case. She has not taken another case since and has been obsessing over what happened.
Personality: Mia is somewhat reserved and mature, though tends to be jumpy under pressure and is prone to bouts of extreme nervousness. She is very quick thinking and clever, and excels at thinking of things outside of the box. As a law student and an attorney, she is incredibly focused and prefers to be over-prepared whenever possible. Perhaps because of this, she has somewhat frequent migraines. Her mind moves at a mile a minute when it comes to her work, leaving room for little else, including peoples' names, which she forgets constantly.
She is a relentless idealist and would take even the most dire cases as an attorney if she felt the defendant was truly innocent. Once she places her belief in someone, she never gives up on them, even if they give up on themselves. She can be given to false bravado and bluffing, not even shying away from intimidation tactics if she felt they would help her succeed.

Abilities: Mia Fey, as a member of the Fey clan of spirit mediums, is a medium herself. She hasn't practiced her powers in some time, so she is rusty, but she has the ability to channel spirits of people who have died so that the living may communicate with them. She is not conscious or aware of anything while she does this, and has no control over her body in this state. As a side effect of the Fey Family technique, her body also takes on the appearance of whomever she is channeling. Normally, she does not have a limit on how long she can hold a spirit, but on the Black Tide, she is limited to holding a spirit in her body for about 30min before she "comes back".
Another ability of the Fey women is the ability to tell when they are being lied to, provided they have a Magatama that has been charged with spiritual energy on them. Using the Magatama, Mia is able to see “psyche locks” which block off the truth in a person’s mind and look like literal red locks, held up by chains. Mia is able to break these locks by using evidence or facts to expose the truth that has been concealed. No one can see them if they are not holding the Magatama, and Mia cannot see them unless she is making a conscious effort to do so.” While Mia wears a Magatama at all times, on the Black Tide her spiritual powers are too weak to charge it regularly. Normally, she could have it fully charged all the time, but on here she can only charge it for short periods every couple of days. As far as utility, if she already suspected someone was lying to her, she could probably use it to confirm her suspicion.
The psyche-locks normally allow the user to whittle away the lies surrounding the truth being concealed, but as Mia is not able to keep it charged for long, this ability will likely not come into play (unless someone specifically would like her to for reasons of plot or other things).
Items: Mia Fey, as an attorney, tends to have a briefcase on her at all times. In her briefcase at the moment are files for assorted cases, most of which she was assisting on at her firm, not actually taking on herself. She also has two case files for old cases: one labeled "DL-6", which contains a picture of her mother and several news articles; and another for a murder case with defendant Terry Fawles and victim Valerie Hawthorne, where she is listed as the defense attorney. She also has a small schedule book, a magatama around her neck, and a coffee mug with a little coffee in the bottom that she had been drinking when she was spirited away from her office to the Black Tide.
Preferred Quarters: Near Godot, please~! <3
Third Person Sample:
Mia Fey woke up on the first day of the bar exam with a pounding migraine and a law book over her face. She did not remember when she had fallen asleep, but apparently, it was before she had finished reading whatever passage was currently stuck to her mouth.
She had been holed up in her apartment for months, and she still did not feel ready for this.
When she walked into the testing room, she had been wound tight. Someone near her dropped a pencil during the roll call and she nearly jumped out of her seat, letting out a small yelp. One proctor glared at her for a good ten seconds for the interruption. Mia attempted to disappear. Every second the proctor spent reading the instructions for the test felt like it was melting into hours. She tried to find something to focus on, but the only thing other than her fellow test takers was the clock, and staring at that only seemed to make time go slower.
She wasn't ready for this. How could she be?
She had grown up in a tiny mountain village and, until she left six years ago, she had never even gone to a normal school. She grew up on lessons of meditation, channeling, and energy healing. What did a backwater girl like her know about law?
Yet, here she was, about to sit for the bar exam. Here she was, a few short months after graduating at the top of her law school class. She must have done something right, but she'd never been more nervous in her life.
She was going to fail.
She was going to have to spend another 3 months studying for this stupid test, locked in her apartment memorizing codes, tax laws, and minutia. Only to come back and probably fail again. The thought made her nauseous.
Maybe she should just go home. Pack up her apartment and head back to Kurain--surprise, everyone! Mia is a disgrace, just like her mother, and is back to continue sullying the name of Fey for another generation.
'No!' She took a deep breath, attempting to steady herself. Failure was not an option. 'Breathe, Mia. You can do this. You have to do this. You abandoned Maya for this. How could you face her if you quit now? Do it for her.
Do it for Mom.'
She spent the next minute breathing slow, eyes closed, repeating that sentence like a mantra. 'Do it for Mom.' She barely heard it when the proctors began to walk about the room, distributing test booklets, and only when one was dropped on her desk did she open her eyes.
She stared at it for a moment. The booklet sat there. Taking a deep breath, she opened it.
'Go time.'
Before she knew it, day one was over. Her hand had not stopped moving in hours, and when she left, she had to flex it for several minutes before it moved normally again. She knew she should be getting a nutritious meal and a good night's sleep, but she found herself going to McDonald's on her way back to her apartment and spending the evening cramming more minutia into her skull. When she could read no more, she crawled into bed and tried to get a few hours
of sleep before part two.
The next day was a blur. Her anxiety from the day before was less, but not gone entirely. Again, as soon as she began the test, she moved like an automaton, completing question after question and essay after essay as if she had been doing this her whole life. When she finished the last session, she went back over the exam. When the proctor still had not called time, she went over it again. It wasn't until her third review that she realized she was the only person not still writing.
An hour later, the exam was over, and Mia Fey walked out of the room, a very different person than had walked in the day before. No longer a nervous girl, Mia Fey was the picture of a confident woman. Without missing a motion, she pulled her phone out of her purse, turned it on, and held down the '2' on the speed dial.
"Sis!" Her sister's voice had changed so much since she left, but it was still her same sister. "Finally out of your study cave? I thought you might have keeled over from exhaustion!"
Mia smiled. Normally, she would have laughed, but her mind was stretched too thin for that. "I passed," was all she managed.
"What? No way! They graded it already? I thought you said it took like, months!"
"They didn't grade it. But I passed." Her smile had become a grin, now. "I'm going to be a lawyer, Maya. I'm going to find out what happened to Mom."
The line was quiet for a few moments before Maya's voice came back. "I'm so proud of you, sis. ...I miss you, though."
She sounded deflated, as if she had been expecting this to just be some phase that, once she finally became a lawyer, would be satiated, and she would come home. But Mia knew her work had just begun.
"Maya...How about you take the train down here tonight? We'll celebrate. I found this great burger joint I think you'll love. My treat."
This time, there was no pause on the line. "I'll be there in 2 hours!" Before Mia could reply, the line went dead.
Finally, her mind remembered how to laugh, and she found she was unable to stop. She might have looked crazy if there hadn't been several other people around her doing similar things. The anxiety melted out of her all at once. She had finished. She was confident she had passed. Absently, she noticed she was crying. She took a few breaths, wiped her tears somewhat unceremoniously on her sleeve, and started straight for the station. Sure, she would be an hour and a half early, but it's not like she had any studying to get done.
When Maya arrived, she would be waiting.
First Person Sample:
[What is...where is this, exactly? Mia is confused, to say the very least. She finds herself taking an inventory of the room without realizing it. It seems unremarkable, from what she can see... And what's with this phone...thing?
She starts mashing buttons and accidentally starts up an audio post.]
Oh, crap, I'm not good with technology-- Is anyone out there? Where is this?
[Realizing she has likely been brought here against her will, Mia changes her tone.]
Who has brought me here? I'll have you know I am a lawyer, and if I don't get answers soon, you'll have real trouble on your hands!
[Nevermind that she isn't trained as a civil lawyer, nor does she have the authority to make arrests. ...They don't need to know that, in any case.
Though, no one seems to be listening to her threats.]
Is...Is anyone even on the other end of this thing?
